Happy New Year from the iodé team!

News

As we turn the page to 2025, we wanted to reflect on the achievements of 2024. Let’s take a look back at what we accomplished between the team and the community this past year:

iodéOS 5: Improved privacy and security

This year saw the rollout of iodéOS 5, based on Android 14, which brought security and privacy advantages over previous versions. We took community input very seriously, and we will continue to do so for the release of iodéOS 6.

Improved app compatibility

As an open source project, iodé relies heavily on community initiatives like LineageOS and MicroG. Our team worked hard in 2024 to improve compatibility with apps and features such as Android Auto, ensuring that iodéOS appeals to an even wider audience.

A makeover of the iodé blocker

The web of the 2020s has become a minefield of trackers and malicious data collection. Trackers are embedded in most apps and websites: they collect personal, behavioural and metadata, often shared with third parties for profit. The iodé blocker is a cornerstone feature of iodéOS: it automatically blocks all these trackers and malicious data collection for you. In 2024, we redesigned the user interface and added a widget to give you a powerful and easy-to-use tool to maintain your digital autonomy.

Per-app blockings

Yearly and Lifetime Premium

iodéOS Premium unlocks many blocker features to fine-tune your protection or that of your children. We now offer annual access to iodéOS Premium for easier billing and savings on the monthly price. 2024 will also see the introduction of lifetime subscriptions to iodéOS Premium services! This means you can make a single payment to always have access to all present and future functionalities.

Introducing Thunderbird mobile

The fusion of Thunderbird desktop with K9 mobile had us excited: Thunderbird has long been the most popular open source email client for desktop, and with the release of a Thunderbird mobile, we knew we’d wanted it to become our default email app. We included it in iodé 5.8!

Device support for new manufacturers

2024 was a year of growth: iodéOS is now officially supported on 47 devices! We ended 2024 by adding official support for two more brands: both Motorola and Braxtech. With this expansion of our user base, we will be able to devote even more resources to development in the coming years.
The Brax3 crowdfunding is a great success, and is our first foray into the North American market. Thousands of devices have already been sold in the pre-sale, which is expected to ship in March 2025. With the purchase of a Brax3 or any of the devices available in the iodé shop, you’ll be happy to know that your privacy-respecting device will also retain its warranty. No matter your preferences or budget, there’s an iodé device for you.

Generic System Image (GSI) support

Our community is passionate: contributors develop and maintain dozens of community supported devices. In 2024 we released a GSI so that people could bring iodéOS to hundreds more devices, and success stories keep rolling in.

iodé tablets

We listened to the community, particularly from parents who want their children to have a privacy respecting device that includes parental control. In 2024 we introduced the first iodé tablet, but it won’t be the last!

Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond

The success of 2024 reinforces our belief that the best is yet to come. Our mission is to provide a private, secure, sustainable and open source mobile operating system so that everyone can enjoy digital privacy while reducing their environmental impact.

Here’s to a new year filled with progress, innovation, and shared success. Thank you for being part of the iodé journey—we couldn’t do it without you.

Happy New Year!
